michael jackson is dead.

he is. but yesterday i was waiting for the train and across the platform i could hear the faint sing-a-long with headphones in of smooth criminal. i watched this man as he emulated, move for move, the exact dance of MJ in the music video. it was actually really impressive and i thought about how much my dad would have enjoyed that free show.

i started thinking of these great, dead musicians that are imitated day in and day out. there's a MJ impersonator who seems to go to work with me a good bit; he even wears the black military jacket outfitted in gold accessories. he shouts things and makes quick crotch grabs. in vegas it's elvis, and in LA it's MJ again. these guys are good too. they get those dances down. the expressions. the ways they interact with people... they know how to copy.

it made me wonder how the perception of Jesus and the gospel would change if we, the church, could figure out how He danced, move for move.

most of my interactions with the church have been gross. my initial reaction to that statement is, "harsh." but then my mind plays a quick montage of meetings with pastors and youth pastors, my family in the late 90's in chicago, worship leaders executing tyranny... and i think, nope - not harsh. accurate.

if they say they love Jesus, they should dance like him. he wasn't choosing to dance with people based on their profession; He can i have this dance?'d many a hooker and a tax collector. he wasn't choosing to dance with people based on their income; He can i have this dance?'d many a beggar and a king. he wasn't choosing people based on their roots; He can i have this dance?'d many a jew and a gentile.

he danced with anybody. and i think we should figure out how he did that.
