foreword

i've only just begun to penetrate viktor frankl's book man's search for ultimate meaning. and yet i'm already analyzing it. ha.

swanee hunt, united states ambassador to austria, tells in the foreword how he met viktor frankl, the author. hunt said he shook his hand and stated, "i read your book 25 years ago, and i still remember it."

frankl asked, "do you remember in your mind, or in your heart?"

"in my heart."

"that's good," frankl answered.

- i wonder if we all have selective memory. not the kind where you pick and choose what you would like to remember, but the kind where you cast it from your head or your heart.

where do my memories come from? sometimes a memory makes my head hurt, but is that because it made my heart hurt first?

i think perhaps the more important memories come from your heart. your mind can be packed to the brim with math equations and fancy words, but i think your heart is as useless as a dole razor without love, compassion, tears, joy, and sorrow.

i hope that in the end, i'll be sitting on the sidewalk, remembering how much i felt, not how much i knew.

those kind of memories come from the heart.
