making space

one of the wonderful and awful things about my work schedule is that it changes every week. this is awesome when we need flexibility with each other and tough when i would love to create a consistent routine in my work week.

morning rush hour here starts at eight. meaning if you need to be at work at nine (and most people do), the train is your enemy. your ENEMY. people step on you, blow out halitosis laced sighs of exasperation while they try to hold the pole and rest their forearm on your breasts. so if i see a nine o'clock start time on the schedule for my work week, i steel myself and prepare for the worst.

lately, however, i've been so excited when i see it. 9. a time where i can take control, make a different decision, and not let the chaos of grumpy commuters ruin my morning.  if i wake up ten minutes earlier on these mornings, TEN minutes, the entire trajectory of my morning changes.

because i usually allow for extra time anyways, giving myself that extra ten minutes gets me to work about thirty minutes earlier. the train isn't stopping in each station for extra time while the conductor yells on the speakers for passengers to please step ALL the way into the train, and no one is trying to bump and grind with me. my train ride is more peaceful, i will likely get a seat - making reading my Bible and worshipping more of a savored activity and less of a chore. i have time to stop and talk to my security gaurd friend about her marriage and pray for her, or i have time to write in the second story of whole foods while i watch snow fall on this beautiful city.

my dad posted a quote the other day: "the moment we enter reaction mode, we've surrendered our day to the whims of others." i thought of those 8AM rush hour commutes and how many of my interactions throughout the day were poorly handled due to the fact that i started out on the wrong foot.

SO. for me, ten minutes changes my day. what could change yours?
